MILL CREEK — The Marysville Pilchuck and Mountlake Terrace basketball teams battled in a close game for the first three quarters.
Then the Hawks took over.
Mountlake Terrace scored the first 14 points of the final quarter to pull away and earn a 70-53 win in the 3A District 1 third-place game Friday night at Jackson High School, clinching a berth in the regional round of the state tournament.
“It really comes down to just the will of the kids,” said Mountlake Terrace head coach Nalin Sood. “They had a great will to be successful in that game tonight.”
The Hawks took a 49-46 lead into the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth game to that point. Senior posts Loren Lacasse and Greg Bowman then took over for Mountlake Terrace, scoring eight points apiece as the Hawks outscored Marysville Pilchuck 21-7 in the quarter.
Bowman finished the game with 23 points and 16 rebounds and Lacasse also notched a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawks.
The duo helped secure a state berth for Mountlake Terrace (17-7 overall) for the fourth-consecutive year. The Hawks will be the District 1 No. 3 seed and will face the District 3/4 No. 2 seed in the regional round of the state tournament next weekend.
“It’s how unselfish they are,” Sood said of Bowman and Lacasse. “You don’t see them put up a lot of bad shots. They’re willing to give up a good shot for a great shot. They find each other. There’s just a synergy between Greg and Loren.”
Junior wing Bryce Juneau had 18 points to lead Marysville Pilchuck (10-13), which saw its season end with the loss.
