Josh Martin led all scorers with 23 points as the Cougars punched their ticket to the 4A state tournament with the win. Peyton Cordova-Smith added 21 for Bothell (16-9).
The Warriors (15-10), winners of 10 of 12 games entering Saturday, didn’t shoot their best or play as well as they recently had to get to the brink of the state playoffs.
“It’s tough to end that way,” coach Steve Call said. “That’s for sure, disappointing.
“We had a great postseason ... I thought the Snohomish game (66-57 win Thursday) was our best of the season.”
Trailing 33-26 at half, the Warriors quickly closed it to a three-point Bothell edge and would trim it to two points midway through the third quarter, but would get no closer.
The Cougars got it down to their 6-foot-9 post Martin in the second half, but E-W couldn’t respond with it’s own 6-foot-6 senior post, Travis Bakken, who had just five of his 13 points in the second half and no field goals in the final quarter.
That one game didn’t detract from what Call thought of his seniors.
“Hats off to Travis and Jason (Smarr),” the coach said. “They carried us this year.”
He went on to recognize Theo Lebesis, Tate Budnick and Anotonio Sherill, who made up the rest of the five-man senior class.
“I couldn’t be more proud of those five guys,” Call said.
The coach didn’t look forward to next season when he’ll have to replace the seniors, but was still optimistic.
“We got farther than we’ve been in awhile, so that’s good,” he said. “Hopefully we can build on it.”
