Outdoor events: Pack light, learn about slugs, Fred Beckey, more

Pack light: Get tips on how to pack light when you hike, backpack or climb. Learn about packs, sleeping bags, tents, cook sets and more. It’s at 7 p.m. today at the Mountaineers program center in Seattle. Get more info here.

Oceans: Learn about how marine debris affects the environment and what can be done to prevent it. Booths with info will be set up and there will be discussions and a Q&A. The event is 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today on the Everett waterfront. Get more info here.

Gear: Learn about innovations in outdoor exploration from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at MOHAI in Seattle. The museum is free all day that day. There will be activities, resources, demonstrations and conversations with outdoor experts and organizations. Get more info here.

Slimy: Learn all about the fascinating stories of slugs and snails at 7 p.m. Thursday at Northwest Stream Center in Everett. This event is PG-13. No, really. Slugs and snails are more fascinating than you might think and the event is not for little kids. It’s $5 for members or $7 for non-members. Register in advance by calling 425-316-8592. Extreme: The Radical Reels Tour, featuring extreme sports, is Thursday at the Mountaineers in Seattle. Get more info and tickets here.

Snow: The Spree at Alpental is Saturday. It’s for skiers, boarders and snowshoers. There will be races, gear demos and more. It’s a fundraiser for Outdoors for All. Get more info here.

Beckey: Fred Beckey, a local climbing legend, will speak at 7 p.m. Saturday in Tacoma. Beckey, who has more first ascents than any other climber, is the author of many books about climbing in the Northwest. Tickets for the event, which is expected to sell out, are here.

Bears: Learn all about bears at the Northwest Stream Center at McCollum Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Learn about bear biology and how to stay safe in bear country. You’ll also get a chance to meet two Karelian bear dogs. Get more info here.

Impressive: Listen to Heather Anderson, who set a record for the fastest known time for hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, speak on March 11 in Bellingham. She will speak at 7:30 p.m. at Backcountry Essentials, 214 W. Holly St., Bellingham.

Birds: John Klicka of the UW Burke Museuem will speak about the bird research done at the museum. He will be at the Pilchuck Audubon Society at 7 p.m. March 14. Get more info here.

More birds: The Wings Over Water birding festival is March 14-16 in Blaine. There are both indoor and outdoor events. Most of the event is free, although field trips to Semiahmoo Spit or Drayton Harbor are $5. Get more info here.

Yet more birds: Visit four homes in Mukilteo and see what the homeowners did to attract wildlife to their properties. The event is from noon to 3 p.m. on March 16. Get a map at the Mukilteo Library from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Get more info here.

Whales: Learn more about the orcas and other whales that live in the Salish Sea at 7 p.m. March 20 in Mukilteo. Howard Garrett of the Orca Network will speak and show a slideshow. There will be a door prize for a pair of whale watching tickets. Get more info here.
