SNOHOMISH — Minor flooding is predicted along the Snohomish River by early Friday morning.
Most of the western half of Snohomish County remained under flood watch Thursday, meaning flooding is possible but not imminent. The extra burst of rain also triggered a mudslide above the railroad tracks near Mukilteo on Thursday morning.
Flooding is predicted on rivers in north King County that feed into the Snohomish River, according to the National Weather Service. Small streams and creeks also could cause problems throughout the region.
At this point, flooding is not expected on the Stillaguamish or Skykomish rivers, though they are expected to rise.
Up to five inches of rain fell in the region between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, the weather service reported. Up to three more inches were expected Thursday, with more in the mountains than the lowlands.
A mudslide was reported at 6:18 a.m. Thursday on Burlington Northern Sante Fe tracks three miles south of Mukilteo, railroad spokesman Gus Melonas said.
The movement of mud, rock and trees set off a slide-alarm fence owned by the railroad. The slide went over one of two tracks in the area.
Passenger trains were halted for 48 hours. Freight trains began again after debris was cleared around 10 a.m., Melonas said.
As the weather stays finicky, people are reminded not to drive through flood waters and to obey road closure signs. Additional landslides also are possible as water soaks the ground.
Temperatures in Everett are predicted in the 40s and 50s, with plenty of rain, through Sunday.
