They’ve got grande plans

And Juan Valdez is on the faculty: The University of California, Davis, is hosting a research conference at its newly created Coffee Center where it plans to offer a major in coffee science.

For students interested in double majors, the Coffee Center will be located between the Institute for Half & Half and the School for Doughnut Sciences.

Hungry like the wolf: Yellowstone National Park says it has ended its shipment of bison for slaughter after 600 were removed from the park to control the population and prevent them from straying onto ranchlands in Montana.

A spokeswolf for the National Association of Predators reminded park officials that if ranchers and hunters would stop shooting, they would be happy to take care of the bison.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1979, the Philips company demonstrated a prototype compact disc player at a news conference in the Netherlands.

Despite the engineers’ choice to play Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me,” Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and Peaches and Herb’s “Reunited,” financial backers were able to see the potential of the CD.
