Zillah defeats King’s 52-46 in Class A boys state title game

YAKIMA — Tournament MVP Brady Widner scored a game-high 21 points to lead Zillah to a 52-46 win over King’s for the Class 1A boys state championship Saturday.

It capped a perfect season for the Leopards, who finished at 27-0. They were playing in their third championship game in the past four years, having lost in 2011 and 2012.

It was the second title for Zillah coach Doug Burge, whose team also captured the crown in 1994.

Justin Dunsmore, who was also voted to the all-tournament team, added 13 points — 10 in the second half.

Tied 25-25 at the half, Zillah took the lead on a Widner 3-pointer with 6:21 left in the third. Though King’s knotted the score again twice in the fourth quarter, the Knights never retook the lead.

Kurt Calhoun grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and Dunsmore added seven as the Leopards outrebounded King’s 41-32.

Calvin Kispert led King’s with 10 points.

In the third-place game, Jim Townsend scored a game-high 20 points to lead Okanogan to a 56-37 win over Seattle Academy.

Townsend, who scored 13 points in the second half, made 7 of 14 shots. Justin Rivas and Tyler Morris each chipped in nine for the Bulldogs (27-1).

Daniel Davydov led SA with 16 points, and Jeremiah Hobbs added seven for the Cardinals.

Okanogan enjoyed a 44-28 rebounding advantage, with Townsend grabbing nine and Morris eight. Rivas added three steals despite sitting out most of the second half in foul trouble.

Earlier, Trey Drechsel scored a game-high 16 points to lead Cedar Park Christian to fourth place with a 54-39 win over Toledo.

David McLaurin added 14 points, including 10 in the first half.

CPC took control with a 17-5 run in the second quarter that saw Toledo held scoreless over the final five minutes of the half.

Brent Wood led Toledo with 12 points and six rebounds, and Grant McEwen chipped in 10 points.
