Michael Bennett expected to sign with Bears… Wait, no, never mind

On Sunday, the Chicago Tribune had an article that said the Bears were in strong pursuit of Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, and were expected to get a deal done with the free agent: Officials for three other clubs linked Bennett to the Bears and two said they expect it to happen after free agency opens at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Bad news for the Seahawks, right?

Well maybe not. As that article notes, there is still time for the landscape to change for Bennett and any other free agent, and sure enough, the word Monday is that Bennett is likely to stay in Seattle.

Bennett didn’t give much away during an appearance with brother Martellus, a tight end for the Bears, on the NFL Network this morning, saying, “You just gotta stay tuned, like a suspenseful movie.”

Just as you would have been wise to not freak out about Sunday’s news, you should probably hold off on celebrating Bennett staying in Seattle for the time being. The latest turn is certainly an encouraging one, but this situation serves as a good reminder that you shouldn’t overreact to every rumor and report you hear during free agency. There’s lots of misinformation out there, much of it intentional, so, like Bennett says, stay tuned.
