PEORIA, Ariz. — The Mariners trimmed their big-league camp roster by 11 players Tuesday morning before departing for their game against the Los Angeles Angels in Tempe, Ariz.
Five players were optioned to Triple-A Tacoma: left-handed pitcher Bobby LaFromboise, right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom, catcher Jesus Sucre, first baseman Ji-Man Choi and infielder Carlos Triunfel.
Six players were reassigned to minor-league camp: right-handers Logan Lensing and Matt Palmer, lefty Nick Hill, catcher Mike Dowd and infielders Ty Kelly and Nate Tenbrink.
“The numbers are such that we need to start moving guys out,” manager Lloyd McClendon said, “but their performances will not be forgotten. At some point, they’ll be back. It is what it is.”
The distinction: Players on the club’s 40-man roster are sent to the minors on an optional assignment; all others can simply be reassigned. The moves reduced the camp roster to 44 players, including 12 non-roster invites. They also came the morning after the Mariners played the second of two day/night doubleheaders in a three-day span.
