Breno Giacomini, the Seahawks starting right tackle for two and a half seasons, has reached an agreement on a new deal with the New York Jets, the team announced Wednesday.
Giacomini took over the starting job midway through the 2011 season, then started all 16 games in 2012. He missed seven games early in the season with a knee injury, but recovered to finish the season and start through Seattle’s playoff run as well.
As is the case with many of Seattle’s departing free agents, Giacomini’s departure has less to do with the Seahawks’ opinion of his play, and more to do with the monetary decisions they have to make. Giacomini had a $3.5 million salary in 2013, and while details of his new contract aren’t out yet, it’s safe to assume he’ll make something in that ballpark again. The Seahawks have a young, and yes, less expensive option in Michael Bowie, who started at right tackle when Giacomini was injured, or could also look to add a rookie who can play that position if they think Bowie is better suited to play guard. Alvin Bailey, who played both tackle and guard as a rookie, could also be an option at right tackle, though he saw no game action there.
