Monroe hires head football coach

Brett Jay has been hired as the head football coach at Monroe High School.
Monroe athletic director Joe Delp announced the hiring Thursday morning.
Jay comes to Monroe after six seasons as the head coach at Class 1A River View High School in Kennewick.
Jay compiled a 43-21 record at River View and led the Panthers to three state-playoff berths, including a trip to the state semifinals in 2012. He is a graduate of River View High School.
“It’s been an incredible opportunity to come back to my alma mater and coach,” he told the Tri-City Herald, “but it is a timing thing. It is just time for me and my family to take the next step.”
Jay replaces Dick Abrams, who coached the Bearcats for three seasons. In his first season as head coach, Abrams led Monroe to its first winning season in 19 years. The following year, the Bearcats won the Wesco 4A North championship.
Last fall, Monroe advanced to the 4A Quad-District playoffs, finishing with a 4-6 record.
Abrams stepped down after the 2013 season to “take advantage” of an early retirement option.
