Front Porch: Steves out of Iditarod

Steves out of race: Jan Steves, of Edmonds, was unable to finish the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Willow, Alaska, to Nome. Steves had to drop out of the race early last week after the Finger Lake checkpoint. The 2014 Iditarod winner was Dallas Seavey, 27, who finished the 1,000-mile race Tuesday. The Iditarod started March 2, and it was Steves’ third try. As of midday Thursday, there were 19 mushers still racing.
Free boating safety classes: The Everett Sail and Power Squadron offers free seminars to advance boater safety and knowledge.
Instructor John Tarpley will discuss “Crossing Borders,” 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Bayside Marine, 1111 Craftsman Way, Everett. On March 22, instructor Lloyd Richmond discusses “Knots, Bends and Hitches.” The seminar runs 1-3 p.m. at Cabela’s, 9810 Quil Ceda Blvd., Tulalip. Optional kits available for a fee.

Bingo night raises money for class of 2014: Arlington Dollars for Scholars Chapter is holding its annual Bingo Night on March 22 at Presidents Elementary School, 505 E. Third St., Arlington. Proceeds benefit activities and scholarships for graduating seniors in the Arlington School District.
