All-Area boys basketball teams

First team

Jason Todd, W, Sr., Jackson

Todd averaged 17 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in leading the Timberwolves to a fourth-place finish at state. Todd, a two-time Herald Boys Basketball Player of the Year, will play at the University of Portland next season.

Josh Thayer, G, Sr., Stanwood

One of the best defenders in the league, Thayer finished with 91 steals, and set a school record with 11 in a single game. Thayer, a four-year varsity player, averaged 16 points and four steals per game for the Spartans, who rolled through the regular season undefeated and made it to the Tacoma Dome for the first time since 2010.

Dan Kingma, PG, Sr., Jackson

A future walk-on at the University of Washington, Kingma led the Wesco 4A South in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Jackson head coach Steve Johnson has called Kingma “one of the best point guards in the state.”

Greg Bowman, P, Sr., Mountlake Terrace

Averaging a Wesco-leading 21 points per game, Bowman led Mountlake Terrace to the regional round of the state tournament — his fourth consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Along with fellow post Loren LaCasse, Bowman helped the Hawks finish 17-8.

Drew Stang, P, Sr., Stanwood

A key component of Stanwood’s offense, the 6-foot-8 Stang averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game and shot 58 percent from the field. He also was a strong presence on defense, where he averaged four blocks per game for a Stanwood squad that enjoyed its best regular season (20-0) since 1948.

Zach Ward, Stanwood

Ward led the Spartans to their first undefeated regular season in 66 years. Stanwood finished second at the district tournament but won its regional game and advanced to the state quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome. Stanwood posted a 23-3 record and placed sixth at the state tournament, the Spartans’ best finish since 2002.

Second Team

Jace Chacon, G, Sr., Everett

Trey Chambers, G, Sr., Glacier Peak

Kaleb Bryson, G, Sr., Arlington

Jason Smarr, W, Sr., Edmonds-Woodway
