SNOHOMISH — Trailing by one run with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Lynnwood’s Brice Foster hit a two-run single and the Royals held on to beat Glacier Peak in the season opener for both teams.
The Royals found themselves in a 7-1 hole after the games first three innings before breaking out a five-run fourth inning to get themselves back into the game.
“Early in the game we were hitting pretty good but we weren’t able to put anything together,” said Lynnwood head coach Adam Villalobos. “But once we figured that out we started playing well.”
Freshman Jared Whitman held off the Grizzlies in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Royals. He pitched four innings of scoreless relief after starter Foster gave up seven runs in three innings.
“He’s a young kid; today was his first time out on the bump for us,” Villalobos said of Whitman. “He threw strikes and he showed the maturity of a junior or senior.”
Kyler McMann went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Royals. Branson Barnecut and Ray Rude each finished 2-for-2 with two doubles for the Grizzlies.
