Flynn’s RBI single in ninth leads MP softball past Terrace

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Marysville Pilchuck’s Sarah Flynn hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth to drive in Karly Albertson and the Tomahawks held on to beat Mountlake Terrace 3-2 in an extra-inning game on Thursday.

Tomahawks starter Jordan Willard gave up two early runs, but shut down the Hawks offense over the final seven innings to allow Marysville Pilchuck to stay in the game.

“We’re trying to preach, ‘Keep games close, play good defense … and we’ll have a chance,’” Tomahawks head coach Aaron Zachry said.

Flynn finished 2-for-4. Kaitlyn Weilgus also added two hits for Marysville Pilchuck.

The Hawks’ Maddy Kristjanson went 2-for-3 and opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run. Ashley Fitzgerald added an RBI triple in the second to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

But the Tommies responded with two runs in the top of the third. Kylie Lopez’s RBI single with two outs tied the game at 2-2.

From there, Willard and Hawks pitcher Gabby Calhoun stymied the opposing offenses.

“There were opportunities for each to pull ahead, but the teams on defense would make a great play to stop rallies,” Zachry said.

The Tomahawks finally broke through in the ninth when Albertson singled with one out and was sacrificed to second. Flynn then lined a first pitch fastball back up the middle to break the deadlock.
