MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — In a game that stretched over two days, Lynnwood got a sacrifice fly from Brady Girgus in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run and held on to beat Mountlake Terrace 2-1 on Thursday.
With the game tied at 1, Girgus, a sophomore, hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Jared Whitman from third base with one out in the top of the seventh inning. The Royals, who led 1-0 after the game was called due to rain after the second inning on Wednesday, improved to 2-0 on the season.
“He’s worked really hard in the offseason on his hitting, and its definitely showing,” said Royals head coach Adam Villalobos of Girgus. “He got a lot bigger and stronger, and he is definitely improving.”
After pitching the first two innings Wednesday, junior Lucas Jungmann started for the Royals again Thursday and pitched a complete game, striking out 10 while giving up just one run.
“He was definitely our guy today,” Villalobos said. “He wanted the ball, came out pounding the strike zone, and everything was working for him.”
Dominic DeMeiro went 1-for-2 with a double after pitching two shutout innings for the Hawks on Wednesday.
The Royals have now won both of their games this season by a one-run margin. They’ve scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to earn both of the victories.
“We prepare pretty well in practices, we do a lot of pressure situation work,” Villalobos said. “Even when we are practicing we try to go game speed, and that has helped them relax.”
