A Transportation Benefit District is a quasi-municipal corporation and independent taxing district created for the sole purpose of supporting transportation improvements within the district.
A TBD is created by ordinance of a city or county legislative authority and may include other counties, cities, port districts, or transit districts through inter-local agreements.
At the Board's November 2010 meeting, after conducting a public hearing, the Board enacted a $20 vehicle registration fee that went into effect July 1, 2011 and generates about $420,000 annually for transportation projects. Projects supported include these: the City street fund for operation and maintenance; the pavement overlay program; the traffic-signal rebuild program; traffic signal reconstruction for Scriber Lake Road at 196th Street Southwest; sidewalks from 48th Avenue West from 183rd Place Southwest to 180th Street Southwest.
In addition to the $20 vehicle registration fee, the Board is considering a possible future ballot measure to either increase sales tax or increase the vehicle registration fee to generate revenue for transportation projects. The Board plans to discuss these potential revenue sources at upcoming meetings.
Regular Board meetings are held on the second Monday of March and the second Monday of October.
