ARLINGTON — Neither Archbishop Murphy nor Lakewood could generate much offense, but the Wildcats capitalized on two Cougars’ miscues to win Thursday’s Cascade Conference game 4-1.
The two teams combined for just three hits as Archbishop Murphy starter Baylee Robertson and Lakewood counterpart Hailey Malakowski dominated throughout the key conference battle at Lakewood H.S.
But after spotting Archbishop Murphy an unearned run in the first inning, Cougars had another error in the sixth that proved to be troublesome. The Lakewood defense dropped an infield pop-up that could have been a potential double play and Gemma Miller proceeded to second as two runners scored to break a 1-1 tie.
“The pitching was outstanding (for both sides),” Lakewood head coach Steve Barker said. “Our errors cost us … the difference was we made two key errors and they didn’t make any.”
The Cougars scored their lone run in the fourth. Paige Cook doubled, the only hit of the game for Lakewood, and later scored on Jennaka Larson’s sacrifice fly.
