Evergreen Speedway set to open 60th season

Evergreen Speedway in Monroe kicks off its 60th season of racing Saturday night.
Opening night includes train racing, Interstate Batteries Hornets, Renegades, Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8ís, Mr. Dizzy Stunt, Small Car Demo Derby, Chain & Go Demo and a fireworks display.
Gates open at 4 p.m., with events starting at 6 p.m.
The trackís NASCAR opener is set for April 5, featuring a special Super Late Model race on the 3/8-mile paved oval, The Coca Cola 125 Challenge, with $4,000 going to the winner of the main event. The Street Stocks, Mini-Stocks and Super Stock Figure Eights also will make their season debuts that night.
The season will be highlighted by two marquee NASCAR events: The Summer Showdown and the annual visit by NASCARís premier West Coast division, the K&N Pro Series West .
The Summer Showdown, on June 27-28, includes the largest Super Late Model purse ever offered at Evergreen Speedway. The 200-lap race will have more than $100,000 in prize money, with $20,000 going to the winner. Entries are coming in from all over the country, track officials said.
The K&N Pro Series West visits Evergreen Speedway on Aug. 16.
In recognition of the trackís 60 years of competition, there will be nights commemorating each of the six decades with special pricing and special guests.
During the season 10 drivers will be added to the list of the 50 Best Drivers to ever appear at Evergreen Speedway. The original 50 were named during the 50th season. The original list includes the likes of Hershel McGriff, Roy Smith, Derrick Cope, Bill Elliott, Geoff Bodine, Ken Schrader, Chad Little, David Pearson, Sterling Marlin, Ron Hornaday Jr., Mike Bliss, Bill Sedgwick, Tom Sneva, Pete Harding and Ron Eaton.
