EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway boys soccer team came into Friday night’s Wesco South game against Mariner needing a win after dropping two consecutive games.
The Warriors didn’t get the win, but they got the next best thing. The game ended in a scoreless tie after two overtime periods.
“It was a great game to watch,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Tony Gilman said. “It was exciting on both ends. We needed this because we had two straight losses where we gave up a goal in the first 10 seconds. We got through a whole 80 minutes and didn’t give up a goal.”
As one would expect after a scoreless tie, both coaches were pleased with their respective goalkeepers and defenses, but frustrated with their offenses.
Gilman was disappointed in his team’s lack of opportunities, while Mariner head coach Vince DeSimone was more upset that his team didn’t capitalize on the ones it had.
By Gilman’s count, the Warriors had just four shots on goal.
“I’m disappointed that we don’t shoot,” Gilman said. “That seems to be a problem. We can do a lot of other things but shoot.”
DeSimone said he counted at least 10 opportunities where he thought his team had an opportunity to score but didn’t.
“We’ve got to finish,” DeSimone said. “You’ve got to score because they can come back and put one ball in the net and it could have been 1-0 for them. You can do all you want, but if you don’t put that ball in the net you can’t win.”
Both teams had a few chances to attack in the first half, but neither team really threatened. In the second half, things changed quickly. Though neither team would ever break through, the pace of the second half was much quicker and both teams had numerous chances.
The most exciting sequence of the game happened just minutes into the second half when Edmonds-Woodway sophomore midfielder Edwing Martinez sent a cross in to senior midfielder Jonas Ferkingstad for a shot. A diving save was made by Mariner junior goalkeeper Silvan Katynskiy to prevent Edmonds-Woodway from getting on the scoreboard.
Mariner answered with a counterattack and quick shot by senior Geovanni Ramirez. The shot was too high for Edmonds-Woodway’s junior goalkeeper Griffin Small to get a hand on, but hit off the crossbar much to the relief of the Edmonds-Woodway side.
Though the Warriors came into the game in fourth place in the Wesco 4A South, they are one of four teams expected to vie for a league title in the competitive division. The others being Mariner, Kamiak and Jackson. One could make the argument that the Warriors needed the game more than the Marauders, but as the season goes along games like the one played Friday could be filed under one that got away.
“I think everybody needs the game, everybody wants to win,” DeSimone said. “You could be in last place or and you still want to win. We want to win too.”
