What: Garrya elliptica
This dramatic winter blooming shrub is also known as the Silk Tassel Bush. Its blooms are called catkins and they appear around December and dangle approximately 8 inches from the branches. It is an evergreen shrub that features interesting wavy edged leaves, and is native to the coastal regions of southern Oregon and California. It tolerates drought conditions and is one of the many winter blooming shrubs that gives the Pacific Northwest its reputation for outstanding late-season landscapes.
Sun or shade: Garrya thrives in full sun.
Size: Expect a mature shrub to reach 10 to 20 inches.
