Dye leads Cascade baseball over Edmonds-Woodway

EVERETT — Led by Ky Dye’s big day on the mound and at the plate, Cascade was able to defeat Edmonds-Woodway 4-1 in Wesco 4A South opener for both squads on Thursday afternoon.

Dye pitched a complete game while striking out nine and went 3-for-3 in the game.

“Kyle threw the ball really well today,” said Bruins head coach Scott Stencil. “He threw well in the first game he started for us this season but he got tired. But he had stamina today.”

Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins managed to tack on three runs — all with two outs — against Warriors starting pitcher Tate Budnick. The rally began with senior KJ Brady knocking in the tying run with an RBI single. Taylor Marquardt then drove in the go-ahead run that would keep the Bruins up for good.

“Tate is a tough competitor,” Stencil said. “He’s their catcher, but he’s also their best pitcher. We knew pretty much going in what he was going to do on the mound and he really did a better job of mixing than we expected.”

Cascade managed eight total hits off Budnick, three of them for doubles by Matthew Butler, Patrick Chung and starting catcher Von Ferguson.
