EUGENE, Ore. — The city of Eugene has started closing the illegal homeless camp known as Whoville.
Police arrived Friday morning and traffic was restricted near the city-owned vacant lot where 40 to 50 people have been staying since last fall.
The City Council recently voted to have camp completely closed by April 15, though Whoville residents and homeless advocates continued to seek a delay.
Eugene City Manager Jon Ruiz said in a statement the city’s goal is for people to leave the site voluntarily and get connected with the services they need to find safe and legal shelter.
KVAL.com reports one person has been arrested on a charge of interfering.
