BREMERTON — The Washington State Ferries said a ferry captain on watch when a ferry collided with a sailboat last fall has been fired.
Spokeswoman Marta Coursey said Patricia Whaley was fired Friday.
The Kitsap Sun said second mate Kirsten Hervey, who was at the helm during the Sept. 13 incident, resigned her position. Both had been on paid administrative assignments.
An investigation in November found the collision was the result of human error by crew members.
The women were piloting the ferry from Lopez Island to Orcas Island.
The ferry was required to keep out of the way of a 25-foot sailboat when it overtook it from behind. But the ferry didn’t slow down until it was too late.
Jack Gray of Chimacum and his dog were aboard the sailboat. They were rescued by other boaters.
