Reece throws shutout as Meadowdale baseball beats Kamiak 1-0

LYNNWOOD — Mavs junior Elliot Reece allowed just three hits over six innings, striking out 10 to lead Meadowdale to a 1-0 victory over Kamiak on Friday afternoon.

“He absolutely pounded the strike zone,” Meadowdale head coach Bill Hummel said of Reece’s performance. “He threw first-pitch strikes to fifteen of the nineteen batters he faced. He was on top of his game today.”

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, junior Parker Coffey singled to start the rally for the Mavericks. Sophomore Colton Witsman entered the game as a pinch-runner, stole second, advanced to third on a balk, and scored on a passed ball to give Meadowdale the victory.

With Reece reaching his pitch count after the sixth inning, Hummel went with senior Matt Hill to pitch the seventh. Hill held the Knights scoreless and gave the Mavericks a chance to win it in the final inning.

Both Meadowdale pitchers benefited from stellar defense, as the Mavericks didn’t commit an error in the field.

“We’ve been strong defensively all year long,” Hummel said. “If you pitch well and defend well you are going to be able to win a lot of ball games.”

Jordan Bettencourt went the distance on the mound for the Knights, allowing just two hits over seven innings. Kamiak’s Jacob Long had the only extra base hit of the day for either team. His double was one of five total hits for both teams.
