Dempsey scored from the field in the 24th and 85th minutes Saturday before nailing a penalty kick in the 87th minute that gave the Sounders a 4-4 draw with the rival Timbers. He has four goals on the season, putting him a three-way tie for the league lead.
Dempsey became the fifth Sounder to record a hat trick, joining Blaise Nkufo, Lamar Neagle, David Estrada and Fredy Montero.
He also becomes the first Sounder to win the MLS player of the week award since Obafemi Martins in Week 29 of last season. The award is voted on by members of the North American Soccer Reporters.
The Sounders (2-2-1) will return to training today, preparing for their 5:30 p.m. Saturday match at FC Dallas (4-0-1).
