SPOKANE — Spokane County authorities say an officer fatally shot a pit bull that bit five people Wednesday evening at a north Spokane apartment complex.
The Spokesman-Review reported that it’s the third pit bull attack in a week in the area. A dog that attacked an 8-year-old girl and two men who came to her rescue last week is scheduled to be euthanized. And a pit bull that attacked a police dog in Spokane Valley on Monday was fatally shot by the police dog’s handler.
Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services director Nancy Hill said an animal protection officer was trying to catch the roaming pit bull Wednesday evening but was having trouble cornering it.
County sheriff’s Deputy Mark Gregory said a Spokane police officer assisting on the call killed the dog when it could not be caught.
Gregory said he believes the dog was new to the family that owned it and “went ballistic.” The dog’s owner was the first person bitten.
