The typewriter is not obsolete. Designers, artists, illustrators, poets and writers still click-clack the machinery to make their art.
“Typewriter Art: A Modern Anthology,” by graphic designer Barrie Tullett, will be out later this month.
Some artists draw the machine itself. Others use it to draw with. The book tracks the development of the typewriter as a medium far beyond what its makers envisioned, from the earliest known works produced at the end of the 1800s, through the pioneers of the 1920s, to the poets of the 1950s.
The book includes 180 illustrations and interviews with a handful of contemporary typewriter artists.
