SNOHOMISH — Meadowdale scored four runs in the last two innings to erase a 4-1 deficit and beat Glacier Peak in a Wesco 3A softball game.
Mavericks junior Hailey Costello doubled in the go-ahead run with one out in the top of the seventh. This came after Meadowdale took advantage of two Glacier Peak errors to plate three runs in the sixth that tied the game at 4-4.
“It was basically the heart attack kids at it again, just like last year,” Mavs head coach Dennis Hopkins said about Monday’s comeback. “Never give up, don’t worry about what’s behind us, just try to figure out how to get it done going forward.”
A big key to the comeback was the pitching of reliever Samantha Gregoryk. Gregoryk relieved starter Julia Reuble in the third inning and held the Grizzlies scoreless over the final four innings and allowed just one hit.
“She was jamming them up by pitching inside and making them ground out,” Hopkins said. “She was really in control of her pitches and kept them at bay.”
Glacier Peak took early control of the game, which was suspended last week due to weather, and resumed two batters into the bottom of the second with the score level at 1-1 and a runner on second. The Grizzlies promptly loaded the bases on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Callie Bircher, Emma Bollinger and Aurora Ellison then each drew a walk that forced in a run.
“We had a lot of great at-bats and forced a lot of walks (eight in total) to get runs early, but later in the game we made too mistakes,” Grizzlies head coach Caitlin Nies said.
