Sands’ late goals give Lake Stevens 2-1 win over Mariner in OT

EVERETT — With Tuesday night’s soccer match just seconds from being over, Lake Stevens Max Sands found the back of the net in stoppage time to tie the game and then scored in overtime to give the Vikings a 2-1 win over Mariner.

After 80 minutes of silence, the Vikings’ offense was saved by Sands as the referee was just about to blow the whistle to signal the end of the game. In overtime, the junior found himself on a breakaway and scored once again to give Lake Stevens its sixth win of the season.

“The whole team went crazy and piled on him,” said Lake Stevens head coach Kit Shanholtzer of his team’s celebration after Sands’s second goal. “It was a bench clearer, which we haven’t had the past couple seasons.”

Lake Stevens sophomore Vaughn Silver held the Maruaders to just one goal on the night, a penalty kick goal by senior Edgar Navarro in the 68th minute.

“I would say they out-shot us ten-to-one,” Shanholtzer said. “Vaugn kept us in the game a lot. We were playing defense the whole game.”

Tuesday’s win keeps the Vikings (6-1-0 in Wesco, 6-1-2 overall) just six points behind Snohomish for first place in the Wesco 4A North division. The loss was the Marauders (4-2-2, 4-2-2) second in a row after starting the season unbeaten in its first six games.

“I think that as a team I haven’t seen a group of guys so emotionally connected in a long time,” Shanholtzer said. “They are playing for each other and its not something you always see.”
