Fargo far gone

You’re darn tootin’: In the midst of an oil boom, North Dakota is desperate to lure job seekers, and not just oil-field workers but staffers for a range of white collar and service jobs. A software executive says Fargo doesn’t deserve its reputation as a cold and odd backwater. “Fargo is fun; it’s safe. It’s warm on the inside,” said the exec.

So are a sauna packed with Swedes, an ice-fishing hut and Marge Gunderson’s parka, but we’re not moving to those places either.

Smells like ... industry: Ford plans to sell its luxury Lincoln cars in China but is having to make some changes for its customers there, including replacing the new car smell with something more familiar to Chinese noses.

We didn’t realize you could make a car’s interior smell like smog.

Step 1: Ban hacky sack: The president of Western Washington University in Bellingham says the college lacks diversity, is too white and should do more to attract minority students.

We can recommend a slogan, if they’re interested: “Western Washington University: Fun, Safe and Warm on the Inside.”
