In my five years as a writer at The Herald — and I assume for many years before that — our policy has been to limit our high school coverage to sports sanctioned by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
The rapid growth of lacrosse in the state of Washington has caused us to rethink that policy.
With 10 varsity level teams — eight boys and two girls — and more than 200 high school athletes playing club lacrosse in Snohomish County, we determined that we would be doing our readers a disservice if we didn’t add lacrosse to our prep sports coverage on a full-time basis.
You might have noticed in the recent weeks that game results can be found in the prep scoreboard and that we covered and photographed last week’s girls varsity game between Snohomish and Mukilteo.
Going forward, look for lacrosse to be treated the same as the sanctioned WIAA sports. We will publish game results in the daily newspaper and online. Marquee games on the schedule will be covered up to and through the postseason and from time to time, we’ll do features on area teams and players.
