Last-second goal leads Shorecrest past Meadowdale

SHORELINE — The Meadowdale boys soccer team started the scoring in its Wesco 3A South game against Shorecrest with a goal in the last minute of the first half.

The Scots responded with three goals in the second half, including one in the final minute of the game by Anton Resing, to edge out the Mavericks in a 3-2 thriller Wednesday night at Shoreline Stadium.

“It was a bit unlucky for Meadowdale and lucky for us,” said Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson. “The kids were excited. Everybody on the bench was on their feet. Any time you score a last-second goal to win a game, especially a big game, it’s very exciting. The games are starting to get more and more important as we get down the stretch here. … Every game is getting more and more important. And this was an important one.”

After Colton Davis put Meadowdale up before halftime, Shorecrest scored two goals in a 10-minute span with Kevin Musar and Chris Iacolucci finding the back of the net for the Scots. Two minutes after Iacolucci’s goal, the Mavericks tied it on a shot by Tristan Springer.

“We took the lead and it looked like things were going good and then they came and tied it up a couple minutes after we scored,” Thompson said. “It was a battle to the end.”

The game remained tied for 23 more minutes before Resing collected a pass from Jack Neffner in front of the goal and slipped it past Meadowdale goalkeeper Benjamin Cruz, who got a piece of the ball as it sailed by in the 79th minute.

“It was probably more like 79:40,” Thompson said.

The win was a critical one for Shorecrest, which finds itself in a tough Wesco 3A South league that features four teams with six or more league wins. Wednesday’s victory — and the accompanying three points — put the Scots at the top of the standings, with a one-point lead over Glacier Peak and Shorewood, which played to a 2-2 tie Wednesday night.

“It was a good, typical Wesco South matchup,” Thompson said. “We have four really good teams in the Wesco South. I think when any of the four of us play each other, games can go either way.”
