LAKE STEVENS — A ceremony is planned in Lake Stevens on May 30 to remember Washington State Patrol trooper Sean O’Connell, who died in the line of duty. O’Connell, 38, was killed in a car accident on May 31, 2013, while working on traffic control related to the Skagit River I-5 bridge collapse.
O’Connell lived in Lake Stevens. O’Connell was the 28th trooper to die in the line of duty. He also is one of more than a dozen law enforcement officers from Snohomish County to die on duty in the state since 1902.
More than 2,200 people, including many troopers and police officers from out of state, attended O’Connell’s funeral at Comcast Arena in Everett.
As part of the public ceremony, 83rd Avenue SE will be given an honorary street designation in O’Connell’s name. The street also will keep its original name.
The new sign will be unveiled during the ceremony, which is set to start at 10 a.m. on the north side of the intersection of 83rd Avenue SE and 20th Street SE.
Drivers should expect 83rd Avenue SE to be closed from about 9 to 11 a.m.
