Edmonds School Board to name new member on May 13

The Edmonds School Board plans to name its new member at its May 13 meeting.

Superintendent Nick Brossoit said Wednesday that the Board interviewed the final five candidates and reached agreement in an executive session on the person to fill the position.

The superintendent said that the four current board members would take an official vote in open session at the May 13 meeting and swear in the new member right after the vote.

The Board interviewed five candidates for the board vacancy at a Monday, April 28, meeting and discussed them in executive sessions both Monday and Tuesday.

Superintendent Brossoit said that Board members are communicating with all who were interviewed.

The new board member will replace Susan Phillips, who resigned March 11 for family reasons. The new member will represent Director District 4, including Lynnwood west of Interstate 5.

The appointed candidate will serve through the next regularly scheduled School Board election in November 2015, when the position would appear on the district-wide ballot for the last two years of the term that Phillips won in 2013. The 2015 ballot also will include four-year terms for the three positions that were filled in the 2011 election.

The person elected in 2015 for the final two years of the Phillips position would serve through the 2017 election, when the position will be on the ballot for a full four-year term along with the other position filled in the 2013 election.

Phillips first joined the board by appointment in November 2007, before winning election to a full term in 2009 and re-election in 2013.

The Edmonds School District includes Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Woodway and unincorporated areas of south Snohomish County.
