Prep baseball: Lake Stevens 10, Monroe 3
The Vikings got the victory they needed, a 10-3 win over the Bearcats, but also got a gift from Snohomish, which lost to Arlington giving Lake Stevens the league championship by itself.
“It feels great,” Lake Stevens head coach Rodger Anderson said of winning the regular-season league championship. “We kind of had a target on our backs and it’s kind of hard to be the frontrunner. I’d rather be the underdog. We hit some bumps along the way, but it feels really good.”
Leading the Vikings to victory was starting pitcher Taylor Shea, who threw five scoreless innings, striking out nine and not giving up a hit.
Shea was on a pitch count after returning recently from a shoulder ailment.
“He had good command of all three of his pitches,” Anderson said. “He looked just like his normal self.”
Offensively, Corey Bullens batted 3-for-4 and finished with five RBI to lead the Vikings.
“Lately he’s been hitting the ball hard, but it’s been right at people,” Anderson said. “Today his ball found some holes.”
Lake Stevens’ Justin Brown also contributed a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with a double and three runs scored.
The Vikings host Lynnwood in the first round of districts at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
