Former Washington quarterback Keith Price was among them. Price, Washington's all-time leader in touchdown passes, agreed to a deal in principle with the Seahawks immediately after the draft. The Seahawks attended his Pro Day at Washington and Price had become friends with Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson at the start of last season.
“We had a good look at him, we've seen him for years,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said. “We had a really good look at him in his workouts. We feel very, very comfortable with him. We know he's got a big upside. Seemed to fit in really well with our coaches. We think we can give him a real good shot at it.”
Price was not invited to the NFL Combine despite holding a litany of records at Washington, including career completion percentage (.640), career passing efficiency (143.2) and single-season touchdowns passes (33 in 2011).
He joins a Seattle team with several quarterbacks. Wilson is the obvious starter, with Tarvaris Jackson as the assumed backup. Seattle traded a seventh-round pick for Terrelle Pryor a little more than two weeks ago and also have B.J. Daniels.
USC safety Dion Bailey was also signed. He joined the Trojans in 2010, the same year Carroll came to the Seahawks.
Linebacker Brock Coyle of Montana and defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat of Texas were other notable free-agent acquistions. Jeffcoat will be trying to make up for the Longhorns not having a player drafted for the first time since 1937.
The other free agents the Seahawks signed are: Central Arkansas tight end Chase Dixon, Penn State tackle Garry Gilliam, Oklahoma guard Bronson Irwin, South Carolina cornerback Jimmy Legree, and Eastern Washington defensive tackle Andrew Pulu, DT, Eastern Washington.
Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor is expected to be ready for training camp after having offseason hip surgery, according to Carroll.
“Kam's making great progress,” Carroll said. “We think he's going to be back in plenty of time for camp and all that. Really glad we could get a chance to fix him. He's been dealing with the hip thing for a while. So, he should be in great shape. There's no problems. Everything's ahead of schedule. We're counting on him being with us throughout.”
