MARYSVILLE — A 94-minute delay and a shootout book-ended the drama in the 3A District 1 Tournament match between Marysville Pilchuck and Meadowdale on Saturday afternoon. It was senior midfielder, Fabian Panduro-Galvan that secured the victory for the Tomahawks, scoring the fourth goal of the shootout to give Marysville Pilchuck the 1-0 victory.
The delay was caused due to having no referees scheuled for the district playoff match, something that Tomahawks head coach Paul Bartley said he had never seen before.
“There was an hour and a half delay,” said Bartley. “Our refs just never showed. The one's we got had to come up all the way from Renton before we could get things started. I think (the delay) took a little bit of the edge off. They waited so long that both teams were able to settle down and play some real decent soccer today.”
Through the match's initial 90 minutes, Bartley complemented the play of both squads. Mentioning that while both teams didn't take many chances on offense, both of the defenses and goalkeepers stepped up and made the great plays that lead to the eventual shootout.
Bartley decided in the shootout to alternate keepers Kole Bradley-Kuk and Ryan Spiva. The Mavs scored the first goal of the shootout with Bradley-Kuk in goal before Spiva stopped the second attempt. Marysville Pilchuck tied it up at 2-2 it in their third attempt before the next Meadowdale shot went off the cross bar. The Tomahawks would score again to make it 3-2 with Panduro-Galvin then securing the win getting the fourth ball in the net to help MP win the match and advance to the next round.
The Tomahawks advance to play Shorecrest on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a district semifinal game.
“Shorecrest has a really solid backline and they're really impressive up front,” Bartley said.
Meadowdale travels to face Oak Harbor in a loser-out game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
At Quil Ceda Stadium
MP won 4-2 in a shootout
Goalkeepers—Meadowdale: Mark Steinke. Marysville Pilchuck: Kole Bradley-Kuk and Ryan Spiva. Records—Meadowdale 9-6-2 overall. Marysville Pilchuck 9-8-0.
