MONROE — It was a long throw-in that denied the Kamiak High School boys soccer team a state tournament berth Tuesday. So there was a certain poetic symmetry that it was another long throw-in that kept the Knights’ season alive Thursday.
Dalton Holdt scored off Garrett Peterson’s long throw-in with 15 minutes remaining, giving Kamiak a 1-0 victory over the Mount Vernon Bulldogs in a 4A District 1 loser-out game at Monroe High School.
Peterson took the throw from the left sideline deep in Mount Vernon territory. The ball cleared the first bank of players and skipped in the goal box, where it deflected off Holdt and into the net for the game’s only goal.
“I don’t know if it’s vindication, but it works,” Kamiak coach Kosta Pitharoulis said about winning on a long throw. “Certainly we would have rather been playing the 7:30 game and already had a state berth tied up, but it’s awesome to be playing again and have an opportunity to get to state.”
Kamiak (12-5-2), the top seed from the Wesco 4A South, needs one more victory to claim a berth at state. The Knights face Kingco No. 3 seed Garfield at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kamiak with a state berth on the line.
Mount Vernon, the No. 3 seed from the Wesco 4A North, finished its season 10-9.
There was no score during the first half, though both teams had one golden scoring chance. Kamiak’s Brandon Wright chased after a long ball, beat his man and rolled his shot past Bulldogs goalkeeper Adriano Terenzi, but it bounced off the post. Then Mount Vernon’s Humberto Garza had the space to fire a shot that went off Kamiak keeper Jacob Parker’s foot and rolled across the goal line, but somehow stayed out.
In the second half Kamiak nearly scored moments before Holdt’s goal when Wright found himself on a breakaway, but Tenzeni closed out quickly to smother Wright’s shot.
