The Huskies (38-11-1 overall, 20-5 in conference play) snapped the Beavers’ 11-game win streak, extended their own win streak to nine games, and tied the Beavers (39-9, 20-5) for first place in the Pac-12 standings.
In the second inning, the Huskies loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. They scored their first run when Erik Forgione was hit by a 1-2 pitch, added a second run on a passed ball and closed out the scoring with an RBI ground out by Braden Bishop.
UW starting pitcher Jared Fisher (6-3) earned the win for Washington. In six innings he allowed five hits, two runs and struck out three.
Both runs Fisher gave up scored on a single by Oregon State freshman shortstop Trever Morrison. Morrison, a graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School, finished the game 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI.
The Huskies and Beavers play Game 2 of their three-game series at 4:05 p.m. today. The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
Washington’s starting pitcher, Tyler Davis (10-1), will attempt to become just the fourth UW pitcher in school history to record 11 victories.
Oregon State coach Pat Casey suspended ace Ben Wetzler five games and ordered him to perform community service for a window-breaking incident in Corvallis, Oregon, last weekend. Casey said in a statement Friday that Wetzler’s suspension began last Saturday. That makes Wetzler available to pitch Sunday in the third game against Washington.
Wetzler faces two misdemeanor charges for breaking the window of a home hours after he pitched eight innings in a win last Friday over UCLA. Corvallis police said Wetzler was intoxicated when he was booked on first-degree criminal trespass and second-degree criminal mischief.
