CW adds 2 shows for fall
Just a pair of new shows will be added to the lineup, a comedy, “Jane the Virgin,” and a superhero series, “The Flash.”
The premise of “Jane” is absurd, but here it goes: Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane, a 23-year-old aspiring writer raised by her mother, grandmother and telenovelas, all of which have given her a warped view of romance and convinced her to save herself for marriage. But during a routine trip to the doctor, she’s accidentally artificially inseminated (the specimen was meant for another patient — oops!) and is now pregnant with her boss’ baby.
Over on “The Flash,” another character influenced by family: Grant Guskin plays Barry Allen, a guy haunted by the murder of his mother and father’s false conviction for the crime. That all inspires him to become a CSI investigator, until the day he’s struck by lightning and wakes up from a coma nine months later with the ability to run at super-human speed.
Looking for some stability after reading about those two shows? Lots of old favorites are back, including Season 10 of “Supernatural” on Tuesdays following “The Flash.” Wednesdays stay the same with good old “Arrow” and the second season of sci-fi show “The 100.” Always-reliable “Vampire Diaries” is on Thursdays at 8 p.m., followed by Mary, Queen of Scots drama “Reign.” Fridays bring the long-running “Whose Line is It Anyway?” and “America’s Next Top Model” back to the schedule.
“Hart of Dixie” and “Beauty and the Beast” will return mid-season, along with dramas “iZombie” (just what it sounds like) and more futuristic sci-fi with “The Messengers.”
Canceled shows from last season: “The Carrie Diaries,” “Star-Crossed” and “The Tomorrow People.” CW executives said on a conference call Thursday that cult favorite “The Tomorrow People” (from “Vampire Diaries”/”Originals” executive producer Julie Plec) was scrapped because it didn’t have enough “social engagement.”
