Joyner, a junior, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes to go with his Wednesday victory in the long jump to give him three first places at the Class 3A District 1 track and field meet at Shoreline District Stadium. Joyner had a time of 10.80 in the 100 to narrowly hold off Meadowdale's Margaryonta Kilcup (10.83), and in the 200 Joyner was clocked in 22.07 to again edge Kilcup (22.33).
Joyner said he felt “pretty good” about his races, even though “I'm pretty sick right now.” The illness began late last week, “and I didn't practice on Monday or Tuesday, but then I had to come run on Wednesday (in qualifying races).
“My nose is super stuffy and my body feels achy,” he said, “but honestly it didn't affect me too much. I was a little sick, but I wasn't going to let it slow me down. And when I warmed up, it started to clear up a little bit.”
On Wednesday, Joyner won the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 11½ inches. That means he will have three events at next weekend's state meet at Mount Tahoma High School, and three chances to assuage the painful memory of a year ago, when Joyner pulled a hamstring muscle in his 100 qualifying heat.
Joyner is particularly looking forward to the long jump competition, and a showdown with Bellevue's Budda Baker, a fellow football standout. The two are the state 3A leaders, with Joyner trailing Baker by a slight margin.
“I want first (at state),” Joyner said with a smile. “Whoever has the worse day is going to lose and I'm bringing my A game.”
The only disappointment to the district meet for Joyner was the disqualification of the Tomahawks' 400 relay team during Wednesday's preliminaries. The DQ, for an exchange zone violation, was frustrating because “we should've taken first” and advanced to state, Joyner said.
With Joyner leading the way, Marysville Pilchuck finished with the district team championship, totaling 101 points. Runners-up Shorewood and Glacier Peak tied for second with 89 points.
Also placing first for Marysville Pilchuck on Friday was Corbin Perry, who won the discus with a toss of 153-04.
Though Meadowdale's Kilcup finished second in the 100 and 200, he had an impressive showing in the 400 relay. Running the anchor leg, Kilcup took the baton trailing by a decided margin, but then ran a blistering leg to pull in front over the last 30 yards for the victory.
Another impressive performance was turned in by Oak Harbor's John Rodeheffer in the 3,200. He had a narrow lead on Mountlake Terrace's Jack Pearce at the bell lap, but then surged over the final 400 meters to win in 9:26.38. Shorecrest's Omar Abdulla was second in 9:33.22, Shorewood's Keenan Stephens was third in 9:33.64, and Pearce was fourth in 9:34.30.
