MOUNT VERNON — The sort of baseball that led the Glacier Peak baseball team to a district championship last week, got turned against them Saturday.
Bonney Lake used timely hitting, good pitching and solid defense to beat the Grizzlies 6-1 in a 3A state regional game at Dream Field in Mount Vernon. Glacier Peak ended its season with a record of 13-11.
The Panthers, the third seeded team out of the West Central/Southwest District, manufactured a run in each of the first two innings off of Glacier Peak starter Jake Lundin to take a 2-0 lead.
Michael Getley knocked in the game’s first run with a single in the first. An inning later, a leadoff single by Zach Lewandowsk produced a run. After a sacrifice bunt and stolen base put Lewandowsk on third, Kash Koltermann hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
The real damage came in the third. Sparked by a leadoff infield single, Bonney Lake used three hits and took advantage of two GP errors to push across four runs and take a commanding 6-0 lead. Most of it came with two outs, including an RBI double to deep left field by Bonney Lake’s Taiki Green.
“We had several opportunities to make some plays in that inning and we did not make any of them,” said Glacier Peak head coach Bob Blair. “Once you hit the round of 16 in the playoffs you cannot give teams more chances and that’s what we did today.”
Glacier Peak starter Jake Lundin labored through three innings, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.
“The umpire wasn’t giving him the outside part of the plate and he just couldn’t be as effective inside if he wasn’t getting the outside,” Blair said of Lundin. “That just kind of set the tone for how he had to work and they took advantage of that.”
The six-run lead was more than enough for Bonney Lake’s Cory Burrill, who didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The senior right-hander struck out nine in a complete-game victory.
“He was throwing strikes. It’s that simple,” Blair said.
One bright spot for Glacier Peak was the pitching of sophomores Cole Walchenbach and Sam Wyatt in relief. The two combined to give up just one hit and allowed no runs in four innings of work.
