TACOMA — The Washington State Patrol has connected a driver’s medical problem to a fatal crash that shut down I-5 near DuPont for 10 hours in December.
The News Tribune reports the 61-year-old from Sacramento, California, had fainted a few times since the Dec. 16 crash. State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill says a medical issue may have led to the crash.
The crash happened about 10:15 a.m. when the Sacramento man lost control of his pickup while pulling a rental trailer north on I-5.
The truck crossed the median, hit a box truck and rammed head-on into a tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer driver, 59-year-old Dale Weaver, of Jamestown, Ohio, died in the wreck. The pickup driver was hurt and taken to the hospital.
Gill says blood test results showed the California man was not impaired.
