4A girls discus
Arlington thrower and University of Washington commit Lyndsay Leatherman is trying to better her third-place finish in the discus, but a teammate might be standing in her way.
Arlington's Justean Landis is coming off of a district championship after throwing a persional-best 132 feet, 4 inches on the first day of the bi-district meet at Lake Stevens High School on Wednesday. That was nearly 4 feet further than Leatherman.
Leatherman still has the better mark between her and her teammate, having thrown 134-0 on March 27 — the third-best throw this season in 4A.
Both Leatherman and Landis will be battling Heritage's Guadalupe Mendoza, who has the best throw in 4A this season at 136-9, and Moses Lake's Elly Johnson, whose best throw of 133-10 is just behind Leatherman.
Other events to watch
3A girls high jump: Stanwood's Madison Yerigan set a personal record and the best mark in 3A this season with a jump of 5-7 in the high jump in the 3A District 1 meet this past weekend. This weekend she'll be battling Kamiakin's Andrea Stapleton (5-6.5) and Holy Names' Olivia Vincent (5-6) for a state title. ... 4A girls triple jump: Jackson's Anna Pischer is tied for the fourth-best jump (36-11.75) with Inglemoor's Anna Richards in 4A this season. She lost out to Richards for the bi-district title this past weekend, but Pischer is looking to get revenge today. ... 3A girls javelin: Shorecrest teammates Katherine Taylor and Aiko Mizumori-Canfield have the second- and fourth-best throws in 3A this season, respectively, with Mizumori-Canfield winning the district title. ... 4A girls 1,600: Lynnwood's Mikayla Pivec set a personal record in this past weekend's bi-district meet, breaking the 5-minute mark with a time of 4:58.62. She joins Jackson's Jessica Rawlins (4:59.77) in the top 10 in the state in 4A in the event. Both Pivec and Rawlins likely won't be able to catch Camas' Alexa Efraimson or Central Kitsap's Rose Christen, but a third-place finish is definitely in range. ... 2A boys 1,600: Lakewood's Douglas Davis recorded a personal-best time of 4:18.75, but finished just three-hundredths of a second behind district champ Devon Grove. Davis and Grove will battle it out with Chad Stevens and Scott Kopczynski, both of East Valley of Spokane.
