UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: The Dodge driver, a 26-year-old Granite Falls woman, has been booked for investigation of vehicular assault. Troopers believe marijuana may have been a factor in the crash. A blood test is pending.

MONROE -- Six people were critically injured Monday night after a multiple-vehicle wreck that shut down U.S. 2 just east of Monroe.

Three more people also were hospitalized with lesser injuries, Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said.

The crash was reported about 6:30 p.m. along a flat stretch of the road. Troopers are still sorting out what happened.

An eastbound Chevrolet Blazer was stopped to make a left turn, Leary said. There was a white minivan stopped behind it.

A Dodge Durango was supposed to stop behind them but swerved and clipped the white minivan. The Dodge then struck a maroon minivan head-on. Another vehicle swerved to avoid the wreck and ended up in a ditch, Leary said.

Twelve people were involved in all. Children were among those injured, but no additional details were confirmed as of 8:30 p.m., Leary said.

The highway was closed until around midnight.
