SNOHOMISH — Prosecutors have dropped a felony theft charge against an Everett woman accused of stealing from the American Legion Post 96 in Snohomish.
Susan Edwards, 52, was the bookkeeper for the military veterans organization for about two years. She was accused of stealing more than $70,000 from the post.
The post’s command staff reportedly met with Edwards in September 2011, confronting her about the missing money. She resigned and left the building without returning.
Snohomish County prosecutors charged her with first-degree theft in 2013.
The charge was dropped last month. Prosecutors wrote in court papers that they couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Edwards embezzled the money.
Her defense attorney hired an expert witness to review the evidence. The expert created a report that later was reviewed by the state’s experts. It was determined that there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed to trial, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Halley Hupp said.
