Upcoming outdoor events: Hiking seminar, free fishing, geocaching

Hiking: Learn about the basics of hiking at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The course is designed to answer questions that a novice hiker may have about how to get out hiking. Learn from experienced hikers what to put in your pack and how to dress for comfort and safety. Free. The talk is in the conference room in the Snohomish Count East Administration Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. Enter through the door on the north and look for a sign pointing to the room.

Trees: Learn about the cultural and ecological importance of trees at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mukilteo City Hall, 11930 Cyrus Way.Tamara Neuffer, education coordinator for the Stillaguamish Tribe and an expert on Western Washington’s native plants, will speak.

Free: On June 7, entry to all Washington state parks will be free in honor of National Trails Day and June 7-8 is free fishing day. Details here. Northwest Forest Passes will not be required in Mount-Baker Snoqualmie National Forest on June 7.

Fish: Cabela’s in Tulalip offers a free fishing event for kids ages 5 to 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Kids can trying fishing in a portable trout pond. There will even be helpers to clean and cook the fish.

Beavers: See the movie “Beavers” and learn about the value of beavers to ecosystems at 7 p.m. June 11 at the Northwest Stream Center in Snohomish County’s McCollum Park, 600 128th Street SE, Everett. At the end of the show, visit a real beaver dam. Free but call 425-316-8592 to reserve a spot. The center is also showing “First Flight: A Mother Hummingbird’s Story: on June 18 and “The Way of the Trout” on June 25.

Birds: Learn about birding with your smartphone at 6 p.m. June 13 at the Pilchuck Audubon Society’s monthly meeting at 2411 Hewitt Ave. And at 7 p.m. Ed Swan will talk about how the habitat of Puget Sound has changed over time.

Geocaching: Learn about geocaching and try it for yourself. This course for beginners is from 9 a.m. to noon on June 14 at Jennings Park Barn, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville. The event is free, but you must call 360-363-8400 to register. All ages welcome, but those under 14 must attend with an adult.

Adventure: Hear guidebook author Tami Asars speak about the world-class hiking in Washington state. Asars will speak as part of The Mountaineers Be Wild series at 7 p.m. June 20 at the Seattle program center. Get more info and tickets here.

Hiking: Guide-book author Craig Romano will speak at 7 p.m. June 23 at the Mukilteo Library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd. Romano is a hiking expert and will talk specifically about hiking in Snohomish County.

Water safety: Learn how to keep you and your family safe in and around water during a series of events at the Snohomish County YMCAs from June 23-27. Events are in Everett, Marysville, Mill Creek, Monroe and Mukilteo. Classes are $10. Check here to register and for precise dates and times.

Terrariums: Kids ages 12-17 can make their own terrarium with sundew, a carnivorous plant. The event is 3 p.m. June 24 at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way.
