Youngsters can learn about saltwater fishing at the annual free Youth Fishing Derby Saturday at the Center for Wooden Boats at Cama Beach State Park.
Adults can cast out the lines, but the kids do all the angling. All skill levels can take a free lesson in shore fishing from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The kids then compete in their age brackets in the derby from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see who catches the longest fish and the most fish.
Prizes will be given to the top finishers in the 7-and-younger age bracket, 8 to 11 bracket, and 12- to 15-year-olds.
The center will rent row boats for $20 during the derby. Participants must adhere to all state Fish and Wildlife regulations, but this day only they don’t need a license.
It’s free fishing day for all in the state, and it’s free parking at Cama Beach. No Discover Pass is required.
Register in advance or the day of the derby. The Center for Wooden Boats at Cama Beach, is at 1880 SW Camano Drive, Camano Island.
