Everett field guide: What’s happening in March

Sean Straub of Experience Everett is sharing this guide to what’s coming up in Everett this month. Look for more updates each month.

Spring is on its way. The days are growing longer (don’t forgot to set your clock forward on Sunday). In a few short months, all this rain will eventually give way to summer sun and blue skies. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. There’s still plenty to do around town between now and then. Here are a few of our top picks for March fun in Everett.

The Schack Art Center (2921 Hoyt Ave.) presents Tangible Evidence March 6 through April 12. The exhibit, now in its 60th year, showcases works by the Northwest Designer Craftsmen. NDC strives to stimulate public appreciation of fine craft by fostering the highest standards of design and craftsmanship. From 5-6 p.m. on March 15, you won’t want to miss a free lecture and “Secrets of the Mount Vernon Culture” mock-umentary screening with well-known artist Jack Gunter. Afterward, head down the street for the Everett Art Walk. The art walk occurs every third Saturday at many local businesses downtown. More information about the Schack and their new exhibit can be found here.

March means St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. Many already know that Everett is home to a few seriously legit Irish pubs. Two of our favorites are The Irishmen (2923 Colby Ave.), located downtown, and Shawn O’Donnell’s (122 128th St. SE), located in South Everett. These two places go all out for St. Patty’s Day, which falls on Monday, March 17 this year. Both pubs will have live entertainment throughout the day, beer gardens, Irish dancing, plenty of bagpipes, and more. Whichever place you go, you’re sure to have a good time. Just make sure to call a cab if you have “too much” fun! These guys have 5/5 stars on Yelp. And the Holiday Inn Downtown Everett has a free shuttle for hotel guests, too.

St. Pat’s isn’t the only exciting Irish event happening in Everett this March. The awe-inspiring Celtic Woman descends on Comcast Arena March 25. The all-new stage production will celebrate Ireland and the Emerald Isles’ spellbinding Celtic heritage through an extraordinary presentation of traditional Irish anthems, pop standards and original music by Emmy-nominated music producer David Downes. The Emerald Tour will showcase inspiring performances of timeless music with the unforgettable, breathtaking voices of Celtic Woman. And while we can’t agree on whether its pronounced “keltic” or “seltic”, we all agree that Celtic Woman is a must-see event. Details and tickets available here.

With spring comes spring cleaning. And if your house is like mine, that also means taking on a few home improvement projects. Home and garden enthusiasts will want to check out the annual Everett Home and Garden Show at Comcast Arena (2000 Hewitt Ave.) this weekend, March 7, 8 and 9. Check out their website for discounts on admission, free parking information and how to score a free wine tasting during the event. Because who doesn’t like sipping some wine while shopping for house and garden-wares?!

Escape the rain by heading to Village Theatre at the Everett Performing Arts Center (2710 Wetmore Ave.) for their production of “The Foreigner.” The Herald’s Gale Fiege writes, “”The Foreigner” is an award-winning comedic farce that remains true to its 1980s sensibilities. It feels slightly dated, but Yorkey expects good comedic timing and fast-moving action from his cast. And they deliver.” Village Theatre productions are one of our favorite things to do in Everett. The quality of the performances, intricacy of the sets and intimate feel of the theatre keep us coming back time and time again. Showtimes and tickets available here.

Speaking of laughs, our south Everett fans will want to check out Everett Comedy Night this Sunday, March 9, at Emory’s on Silver Lake. Local comedian Andrew Rivers (Yup, he’s Bob Rivers’ son) will be in the house and host Cory Michaelis always puts on a good show.

Maybe magic’s more your thing? Everett Historic Theatre brings back illusionist Christian Ford on March 21, 22, 28 and 29. Details and tickets available here.

Recently engaged? Need some ideas on finding the perfect dress, where to host the big day, and, most importantly, cupcakes, cake pops or wedding cake (Hint: all three)? The Everett Spring Wedding Expo hits Comcast Arena on March 22 and 23. Details and tickets are available here. And while we’re talking weddings, make sure to check out the newly remodeled Monte Cristo Ballroom (1507 Wall St.) in downtown Everett. They’ve been voted as the top wedding venue in Washington by The Knot for two years in a row!

In case you didn’t hear, Everett Silvertips – our hometown heroes – just made the playoffs… for the eleventh year in a row! And in their first playoff game, they knocked off the CHL’s top ranked Kelowna Rockets. The Silvertips take on the Tri-City Americans Friday, March 7. The game is expected to sell out, so get your tix here while you can. After the game, head over to the The Austin for Wigstock. What’s Wigstock? How ‘bout four bands, great swag, a raffle, oh, and of course, wigs. Admission is $10 and all proceeds benefit Providence Cancer Center patients. It’s a party with a purpose. Details can be found here. Sorry, kids. Wigstock is 21+.

Last but not least, spring also means that migratory whales make their way back into Puget Sound. Island Adventures offers several great whale-watching cruises departing from the Port of Everett Marina now through May 18th. Details and tickets can be found here.
