Several county high schools nominated for 5th Avenue Theatre awards

The 5th Avenue Theatre’s annual awards celebration honoring Washington state’s best high school musical theater productions begins at 7 p.m. June 9 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

Among those in attendance at the awards ceremony will be students from Kamiak High School, Edmonds Heights School, Stanwood, Glacier Peak, Lake Stevens, Snohomish and Arlington. Other Snohomish County high schools receiving award nominations include Sultan, Monroe and Marysville Pilchuck.

Recognition by the Seattle-based 5th Avenue organization is similar to the Tony Awards, which salute outstanding theatrical productions on Broadway, and can be seen Sunday evening on CBS television. People can watch the 5th Avenue 2014 Awards streaming live on the company’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/5thave.

Throughout the 2013-14 school year, professional actors, directors and crew members affiliated with 5th Avenue Theatre toured the state and saw about 100 musical theater productions, including 14 at schools in Snohomish County. (Edmonds Heights K-12, a home-school resource center, produced two shows this school year.)

The traveling evaluators reported that each of the musicals they saw were worthy of praise. Some of the productions received honorable mentions and a relative few were nominated for awards.

Kamiak High School drama teacher Laurie Levine said she is pleased that so many schools in the county participated in the competition and that nearly as many received nominations. Kamiak’s production of “Kiss Me Kate” got 10 nominations.

Of the eight schools nominated for best overall musical, three are local. Edmonds Heights, Stanwood and Kamiak will perform one number from their musicals during the awards ceremony at Benaroya.

“I appreciate my dream team production colleagues and the 5th for this opportunity for students,” Levine said. “Musicals involve just as many students as would a high school sports team, and I believe it is just as important.”

Outstanding direction: Edmonds Heights, “Pippin”; Glacier Peak High School, “The Boy Friend”; and Kamiak, “Kiss Me Kate.” Honorable mention to Arlington High School, “The Music Man”; Edmonds Heights, “Shrek the Musical” and Stanwood, “Shrek the Musical.”

Music direction: Edmonds Heights for “Pippin” and Kamiak for “Kiss Me Kate.” Honorable mention to Arlington for “The Music Man” and Edmonds Heights for “Shrek the Musical.”

Choreography: Edmonds Heights for “Shrek” and Lake Stevens High School for “Tarzan.” Honorable mention to Edmonds Heights’ “Pippin” and Kamiak’s “Kiss Me Kate.”

Orchestra: Kamiak for “Kiss Me Kate” and Monroe High School for “Oklahoma!” Honorable mention to Lynnwood High School’s “Annie Get Your Gun” and Marysville Pilchuck High School’s “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Scenic design: Edmonds Heights, “Shrek”; Glacier Peak, “The Boy Friend”; Kamiak, “Kiss Me Kate”; Lake Stevens, “Tarzan” and Sultan High School, “Oklahoma!” Honorable mention to Snohomish High School, “Cinderella.”

Outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role: Mariah Lotz as Catherine, Edmonds Heights, “Pippin” and Debbie Hussey as Madame Dubonnet, Glacier Peak, “The Boy Friend.” Honorable mention to Cassia Ward as Snoopy, Jackson High School, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role: Davis Crouch as Donkey, Stanwood’s “Shrek.” Honorable mention to Josh Pulley as Terk, Lake Stevens, “Tarzan” and Taylor Huff as Lord Farquaad, Stanwood, “Shrek.”

Outstanding performance by an actress in a featured ensemble role: Mariah Lotz as Gingy/Sugar Plum Fairy, Edmonds Heights, “Shrek” and Rachel Andelin as Gingy, Stanwood, “Shrek.”

Outstanding performance by an actor in a featured ensemble role: Tyler Good as Pinocchio, Edmonds Heights, “Shrek”; Michael Profitt as Paul, Kamiak, “Kiss Me Kate”; and Garrett Hall as Lionel, Snohomish, “Cinderella.” Honorable mention, Turner Williams as Pinocchio, Stanwood, “Shrek.”

Outstanding performance by an actor or actress in a non-singing role: Alex Rodrigo as Leopard, Lake Stevens, “Tarzan.”
