The 5th Avenue Theatre’s annual awards celebration honoring Washington state’s best high school musical theater productions begins at 7 p.m. June 9 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.
Among those in attendance at the awards ceremony will be students from Kamiak High School, Edmonds Heights School, Stanwood, Glacier Peak, Lake Stevens, Snohomish and Arlington. Other Snohomish County high schools receiving award nominations include Sultan, Monroe and Marysville Pilchuck.
Recognition by the Seattle-based 5th Avenue organization is similar to the Tony Awards, which salute outstanding theatrical productions on Broadway, and can be seen Sunday evening on CBS television. Throughout the 2013-14 school year, professional actors, directors and crew members affiliated with 5th Avenue Theatre toured the state and saw about 100 musical theater productions, including 14 at schools in Snohomish County. (Edmonds Heights K-12, a home-school resource center, produced two shows this school year.)
The traveling evaluators reported that each of the musicals they saw were worthy of praise. Some of the productions received honorable mentions and a relative few were nominated for awards.
Kamiak High School drama teacher Laurie Levine said she is pleased that so many schools in the county participated in the competition and that nearly as many received nominations. Kamiak’s production of “Kiss Me Kate” got 10 nominations.
Of the eight schools nominated for best overall musical, three are local. Edmonds Heights, Stanwood and Kamiak will perform one number from their musicals during the awards ceremony at Benaroya.
“I appreciate my dream team production colleagues and the 5th for this opportunity for students,” Levine said. “Musicals involve just as many students as would a high school sports team, and I believe it is just as important.”
